Surgery and Friday Searches!

Posted on April 20, 2012 at 7:04 am, by Kelsey

Let’s celebrate that we made it through yet another week! And what a week it’s been my peeps. As you know (or should!) I had my followup MRI appointment with my bff Dr. Chin.

And if you are interested in how that went I’ll let you know just by telling you the very first thing he said to me:

I wish I would have seen something different.

WAH? My head zipped around and looked at him with a look of utter terror. I knew what was coming, but to actually hear the words you need surgery if you want to continue running, is another thing.

I’ll keep this short but it turns out the MRI found that my good ole tendons are seriously inflamed and not happy.  Basically the chipped extra bone I have is causing them all sorts of issues.  The tendon that connects my big toe is sea-sawing back and fourth along this chipped bone. So anytime I lift my big toe (walking, running, exercise in general) it sea-saws back and forth on the bone.

In other words, if I don’t get this removed there’s a chance the tendon could tear (OUCH) or it would just continue to get worse.  He did give me some other band-aid type options but nothing that would actually allow me to run at the mileage I want to.  Other than removing the bone of course.

Thankfully this isn’t major surgery so the recovery time is actually fairly fast compared to most other foot surgeries. If recovery goes as planned, I would be in a boot (sexy, no?) for 2-3 weeks immediately post-surgery and then I would move on to 6-8 weeks of physical therapy.  Good new is that boots are the latest fashion craze right now, especially homemade ones.

Then….

then….

then….

I CAN RUN AGAIN!

I actually ran directly after I got home from the doctor. I got home and went right for the treadmill because I knew I needed to let off some serious steam and I figured the bone is coming out anyway so why not go for a run?  And it felt glorious to run (despite the pain).  I am excited to actually have an answer and a recovery plan to get me on track with running again. So, I need surgery, big deal. I’ll work through it with a positive attitude and will appreciate running that much more.

And as promised here are Friday searches:

  • time to catch up with gossip mags (sure is!)
  • annoying swimmers (congrats on  actually landing on the right page, I am seriously annoying)
  • pee’d ryan gosling (again??? why are people continually searching this?)
  • what’s kelsey chows favorite band (I don’t even know who Kelsey Chow is)

I had a really hard time picking my faves for the week because there were two so bizarre:

  • Do you see something creepy
  • I’m 45 and inpregnated a 15 year old

Do you see something creepy? Why did that person end up on my blog?? And to the person who impregnated a 15 year old, shame on you! I’m assuming you ended up on my blog cause of my current obsession with Secret Life of the American Teenager.

That’s all the nonsense I have for now!

Im slightly worried that pervy old guys are being directed to your blog! I’m sorry you have to have surgery, but i really think it will be so worth it in the end, and that recovery time is not crazy at all. Totally manageable. Especially for you!!

I’m proud of you for your great attitude Kelsey. We all face many hurdles in life, we can refuse to jump over them or do our best to clear them. It’s all in the approach. I’m certain you’ll do great!

Ahhh sorry to hear that you need to have surgery :( your attitude about it is so awesome though, it’s amazing! You’re right, and you’ll be running (better than ever) really soon!

On another note, I have a sister named Kelsey…I’m not sure why anyone would be searching for her favorite band though! Creepy. I think there’s also a girl on the Disney channel named Kelsey Chow…so bizarre.

I’m sorry you have to have surgery, but at least you finally have an answer! I had to have my gallbladder out last Friday and it sucked, but I’m glad the pain and suffering is over! I had off work all this week for recovery, and even with the pain it was pretty glorious!

Good luck with it all, keep up the positive attitude!

Ouch! The way you described it with the see-sawing makes it sound so painful! I am happy they can see what the issue is though, and know that surgery is the right fix! Do you have it scheduled already?

    [Reply]

    Kelsey Reply:

Thankfully it’s not that painful right now, sounds really bad though doesn’t it??

Not scheduled yet, hopefully next month though!

I’m sorry to hear about your surgery but I’m glad that its something that can be fixed, you’ll be running eventually- thats what counts right?

Also, if it makes you feel any better, I’ve had three surgeries. One minor on my foot and another major knee surgery. It’s scary but just know that the drugs they give you during and after will make it all okay ;)

Bummer on the surgery! Thankfully, though, it sounds like Dr. Chin really wants to get you back to running and I’m sure with your positive attitude your recovery will be great!

Girlfriend! You should NOT have gone home and ran – do not screw with the tendons! I’m glad you finally have a concrete plan though instead of being stuck wondering. Do not fret, I will make you soup and force you to watch crappy tv shows on your cable tv with me :)

Kelsey! I am so sorry to hear this. I am just happy they found it now and that after surgery you can heal up and run pain free. I completely understand where you’re coming from as I was off with that stupid hip thing (still undiagnosed) for a while. I hope everything goes GREAT! xoxoxox

    Kelsey Reply:

Thanks for the kind words! I hope they figure out whats going on with your hip soon!

Ya know, I’m actually kind of glad that this is the outcome. Because if he hadn’t really seen anything, then you would have had to keep running (or not running) in pain but at least now there’s a plan of action that you know will fix the problem! I’d say this is actually GOOD news! and after having to take a year off after a stress fracture..I can tell you that 8 weeks is nothing and you’ll come back with a vengeance.
