ZOOMA 5K & Half- Marathon
I had the pleasure of spending the entire weekend with some fun Chicago running bloggers! A few of the bloggers were ambassadors for the ZOOMA 5K and half- marathon and decided it would be fun to rent a house for an all girls weekend. It was fun. Really fun. But before I get into the ridiculousness, let’s talk about the actual race.
Since I have a busted ankle, running the 5K was my only option. I’m not used to 5K’s (I think I’ve run two in my life) so I honestly had no idea how to pace for 3.1 miles. I decided last minute not to wear my Garmin and to let my body just decide what was UP for the day.
If you know me at all, you know that I do not like running outside in anything other then perfect weather. Too hot= treadmill, too cold= treadmill. Needless to say, I was not too excited to be running when I walked outside and was immediately freezing. Crap.
The race went off without a hitch. There were only 200 people running the 5K so it was super easy to weave in and out of people while we all found our pace. The second I found my rhythm however, the hill started, and never ended. I’m not even exaggerating people, this was the course:
I KNOW. Most people were walking .25 miles into the race because the hill was so steep! I refused to walk and did that “run” that was even slower then walking. When we got to the turnaround point, I got a little weary knowing the rest was all downhill. Considering how clumsy and ungraceful I am, running down a steep hill scared me.
I somehow managed to not fall flat on my face and crossed the finish line 7th overall and 2nd in my age-group! Though my time wasn’t great (27:13) I was pretty siked to have just broken an hour on that course. Maggie got second overall-WOOT!
Overall, I liked the race. It was pretty organized and absolutely beautiful. I do think however, the 5K course should be changed for next year considering the course was literally up a hill, down a hill. It kind of bummed me out knowing that for a race so short, most of the runners had to walk 1/2 of it. Although we did get some bling that kinda made up for it…
We’ll chat about the real fun tomorrow….That’s all the nonsense I have for now!

It looks like you guys had so much fun!! I wish I could have been there!
And congrats on the 5k! I think I would have died on the uphill, I’m not used to running hills (Chicago is so flat!).

Hey! I’ve got that same shirt Erin is wearing in the first picture! I think my fashion coolness just increased by 500%.
Congrats on 2nd place in your age group! That finisher’s necklace looks so cool. Man, I’d run a stupid course 5K just for a necklace like that haha.

You are awesome.

Excellent point about the 5K race being half walking because of the evil hill. But, you killed it. No hill can own you.

Ugh that’s the worst!! My half was uphill from mile 7-13.1. Nothing worse than thinking you’re in the groove and having a hill thrown into the mix. Glad to hear your ankle allowed you to do it though

Congratulations on placing 2nd in your AG and 7th overall!!! You looked AWESOME out there, especially despite that torturous hill. Way to push through!!!
It was so great to hang out with you and the group this past weekend. Can’t wait for our next running blogger getaway!

Oh man…THE HILL. I keep hearing about this death trap at Mile 11 and it sounds brutal! I’m glad you were able to conquer it though and earn that pretty necklace along with placing 2nd in your age division

Correction – your HILL wasn’t the same as THE hill on Mile 11 right since you ran the 5k, was it? Anyway…a hill is a hill so you still owned it!

no it was the same! our 5K was the last 5K of the half marathon course!
