Question For Ya {3}….

Posted on January 30, 2013 at 7:07 am, by Kelsey

A few weeks ago someone asked me what my earliest memory is-I froze.  Does anyone ever really recall their earliest memory on the spot like that? I’m not sure but it got me thinking about what my earliest memory actually is.

I spent from a few weeks ago until last night trying to sort it out in my head. I had a few memories I kept going back and forth between as to which came first. I finally called my mom last night and of course she knew right away which one happened first. (Mom’s always have the answers to everything-especially mine!)

I was 3 and waking up from an afternoon nap.  I was wearing these purple onesie-footie pajamas and remember feeling really weird.  Our house back then had a long hallway and I distinctly remember walking down the hallway feeling dizzy and just overall off.  When I got to the living room at the end of the hall, I saw my mom sitting on the ottoman and I stared at her for a few seconds-because I saw two of her.  I remember walking over to give her a hug and asking “mommy there are two of you.” I don’t recall anything after that, I just remember those few minutes.

And that’s the story of me waking up cross-eyed and my earliest memory!  I’ve asked a few people about their earliest memory and was surprised that almost every person I asked had a first memory that was either bad or traumatic.  I wouldn’t necessarily call  mine bad but it was definitely traumatic (hello have you seen how thick my glasses are or how big my eyes look in them??).

SO my question for you this week is: what is your earliest memory??

That’s all the nonsense I have for now!

My earliest memory is mundane. about 3 and I am sitting in my kitchen and my Mother is brushing my sisters hair. I can see the flooe pattern and the walls and furniture. It’s just a calm scene. But it is the arliest I can rememeber. I don’t remember anything else until 2007 when I scored these cool socks.

    That’s a really sweet memory!

What about the time you were reading and missed the crystal city stop?

I was about 3 and my parents were dropping me off with my great grandparents for some reason. I was not taking well to this. I distinctly remember the low afternoon light in the room for some odd reason. And my great grandfather was trying to calm me down and bribe me to come sit with him by giving me some chocolate from a jar on the mantel.

Some things never change – I can still be easily bribed with chocolate… :)

I think my first memory is falling off a rocking horse on Christmas morning. I can’t remember if it hurt or not but I wanted nothing to do with the horse after that.

I actually forgot about this until I read Becky’s comment, but I believe my earliest memory was when my parents took a weekend trip to Toronto and left me back at home with my grandparents. I threw QUITE the tantrum when they left. I was probably 3ish when it happened? I’ve got a few preschool memories filed away as well (the day they cancelled school because the building across the street was on fire, bringing my Dolly [who I still totally sleep with] to pajama day, showing off my first chicken pox spot for show and tell and having my teacher show it to my mom when she came to pick me up and consequently having to miss the preschool field trip to the museum because I was poxed), but I’m really not sure in what order any of those things happened.

Are you sure that tantrum didn’t happen like last year?

I’m really not sure… I have very old clips of memories in my mind but I have no idea how old I was. Some of the earliest were probably sleeping over at my grandmother’s house and having a nightmare, and the day my little brother was born (I was 3 and a half) and wanting to name him Rachel because I thought he’d be a girl. And then we got to play in the sprinklers.

So funny. When I was in college, I used to answer this question by telling people I remembered being born. I’d say I just remembered darkness and warmth and then light etc etc. It was always funny when people would go from disbelief to actually believing me… Like anyone would actually recall being born.

Anyway, sounds like your first memory was as a drunken 3 year old. Way to go!

I have very fond memories of using our stair bannister railing as a slide for my miniature plastic animals. I would sit at the top and slide them down to my dad who was sitting at the bottom. I don’t know if that’s my FIRST memory or not, but it’s got to be close because we only lived in that house until I was 5.

One of my friend’s fathers said that he can remember being born. He tells this story of coming out of the birth canal. Honestly: it’s the funniest thing I’ve ever heard in my life. The funniest part is that he is DEAD SERIOUS that he can remember it all.

I think one of my very first memories is going to my mom’s volleyball games in college. I was born when she was a junior (my mom and dad went to school a bit later than other people on account of my dad being in the Green Berets for 5 years after high school). I honestly didn’t *really* remember it until my freshman year of college when I walked into the same gym (now a practice gym) and saw the stripes on the wall. Still the same after all those years!

I have fond memories of 3 and 4 when my dad lived with my uncle and his family. My mom and dad got a divorce and he was able to live with them. So every weekend when my dad picked us up was so much fun because I also got to have slumber parties with my cousin Katie and we would play in the park across the street from their house. I don’t have a specific memory but that is the earliest thing I can remember.

This is honestly something I’ve thought about so much in the past! I have a few early memories but can’t seem to put them into a timeline. I guess I should talk to my mom as well because I’m curious!
