Question For Ya
Posted on January 16, 2013 at 7:35 am, by Kelsey
I’m stealing Kim’s question post idea, thanks gf! Speaking of the word gf (girlfriend), I’m curious what you ladies call your friends.
So, when you’re going out with a friend of yours, are you more likely to say:
A: I’m going out with my friend tonight for drinks.
B: I’m going out with my girlfriend tonight for drinks.
The reason I’m asking is because in the past week alone, I’ve had three seperate people say it’s weird I always say girlfriend. Is that not what most people say?
So, friend or girlfriend??
That’s all the nonsense I have for now!

I prefer the first response. Although I’m not old enough yet to get drinks. Happy Wednesday.

I always use just plain “friend,” but find “girlfriend” more endearing for whatever reason. Maybe I’ll make the transition.

That’s how I feel too!

I do a combo of both but I totally agree with Brittani, girlfriend is more endearing!

I’m pretty much a “friend” person, unless I need to make the distinction (“I need to talk to my boy friends about this, since my girl friends are no help.” Or something like that). However, I did recently discover that when I say “friend,” people tend to assume I’m talking about a girl, not a guy, which I found interesting. We had some extra stuff at the office that I knew a friend of mine could use, so when I asked my boss if I could give it to my friend, he was all, “Oh sure, she can have it.” I definitely had a guy friend in mind, but you know. Whatever. Haha.

I say friend. This is the result of being married to my friend Jess on FB for years. Since Jess can be either a guy or a girl, half the people I met thought I was in a serous relationship with a girl and half the people I met thought I was married to a guy named Jess. While this was a rather amusing ice breaker conversation subject, saying I had plans with a girlfriend made things really confusing for people that didn’t really know me. Saying girlfriend does make me feel older, more chic and less white at the same time.

they’re my girlfriends
unless I’m introducing them to someone else then it’s “this is my friend ___”
I find girlfriends is a little more old fashioned. It’s the same way my grandmother talks about her friends!

I never say girlfriend. I find it weird but that’s just the way/where I grew up.

Friend, for sure.

I’ll say friend or some girl friends, but not girlfriend. When I say it in my head I feel like a sassy gay man.

I call my regular friends girlfriends. I call you my lesbian lover. Why wasn’t that an option?

Girlfriend!!!

Thanks for the shout out!
I always say girlfriend. I sometimes wonder if people think it is weird. Especially since I don’t say boyfriend for my male friends, but I feel like “girlfriend” is more intimate!

I always say girlfriends…I think because my mom ans gram say that?

I think I tend to say ‘friend’ now because when I say ‘girlfriend’ I always wonder if they think I am a lesbian. lol

I don’t think I’ve ever used girlfriend to talk about my friends. But no one around me does either – so maybe it’s a regional thing?

I always say friends. My mom and grandma always said girlfriends, so it seems old fashioned to me. Plus, I like to keep my social goings on a bit mysterious. This ‘friend’ I’m going out with could be a guy, a girl or a penguin and I’m not giving that info up for free!

Hahahahaha I was laughing out loud hysterically at this!

Interesting, I’ve thought about this before too! I used to think it was weird to say girlfriend but nowadays I find myself saying it more often than not.

I say girlfriend but I got it from my mom. You think guys could get away with it? I would have a different reaction if my hubby said that was meeting up with his boyfriend. Lol.
